Designing a Model for Managers' Coaching Competencies

Abstract

These days, the managers of the leading organizations think beyond leadership, and try to play the role of a coach to increase productivity, motivation, creativity and innovation in the organizations. As an approach of developing management and as a strategy for performance improvement, coaching has recently attracted the attention of the researchers excessively. A very important research requisite in this field is to identify the factors affecting the success of coaching, especially the degree of competency and proficiency of coaches, in a practical and assessable model.  This is true because employing the most capable and qualified people for coaching or improving the competencies of coaches, put forward the most critical issue in increasing the quality of management in organizations. Hence, this study is intended to design a model of coaching competency for bank managers. This applied research follows a qualitative method. The participants in the research contain 16 instructors and management specialists in the banking system having been selected by purposive sampling method. The data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and were analyzed by thematic analysis and MAXQDA software. The results revealed 7 competency indicators, including ethical behavior, leadership, knowledge, personality traits, coaching skills, communication skills and managerial skills, for managers as coaches.
